To ensure your waterfall is constantly functioning properly, you will need to follow a few maintenance guidelines.
Change/Add Water: NEVER LET THE PUMP RUN DRY! Check the water level and make sure to add fresh water as needed, usually every 2-4 days. Pay closer attention the first couple weeks until you get a feel for maintaining an adequate water level. The water level should be kept with the pump staying completely submerged and not higher than the bottom of the stone face. Depending on where you live, your water sources will vary in terms of mineral content. Since regular tap water contains these minerals which may build up over time on all surfaces and damage your pump, we recommend using distilled water (or equivalent) which is mineral-free and available in most grocery stores. We recommend monitoring your waterfall during the first few months for any signs of these deposits and adjusting the care accordingly. Prevention is far easier than removing hard water deposits.
Using water treatments will help keep your waterfall looking and smelling clean, and preventing deposit buildup and algae growth. We recommend using Microbe-Lift® Small Fountain Clear™ regularly, as a natural and safe way to help prevent organic contaminants from forming (i.e.: crusty white scale deposits, iron, calcium and hard water stains.) and to keep your water sparkling clean. You can also use other commercial products such as Fountec® and Protec®. Protec® is an additive that prevents and removes deposits, whose formula can reduce the need for distilled water. For best results, you should begin using these products after you install your waterfall to immediately prevent algae and mineral deposits from forming. You should change the water completely every 3 to 6 months.
Cleaning Your Waterfall: To keep your waterfall looking it best, once in a while, wipe down clean the hood and tray with a soft cloth and furniture polish such as Pledge®.
Please remember to unplug your waterfall before any maintenance! Never let you water supply become contaminated from any cleaning methods!
Marble and pebbles can be cleaned as needed every three to six months using CLR® (Calcium Lime Remover) as directed by manufacturer instructions or a combination of white vinegar and water with a Scotchbrite® pad or equivalent. NEVER scrub any surface harder than needed to clean as this could cause damage.
Glass or Mirror surfaces are best cleaned about every two weeks, using a combination of white vinegar and water. If the water is not running smoothly over the glass, wipe off any water on glass and apply a thin layer of Jazz® Window Prep, available at many art supply stores.
All parts should be removed and cleaned, including stones.
Pump: make sure to disassemble the pump and clean the inside every three to six months, as mineral deposits and algae can grow in the pump. Instructions on water pump care as directed from pump manufacturer will be sent to you with your waterfall.
Reservoir: should be thoroughly cleaned with a soft cloth every six months or as needed. Distribution bar: should also be inspected and cleaned with a soft cloth every six months or as needed.
Stainless Steel: waterfalls with stainless steel are basically maintenance free. To remove fingerprints, wipe clean with a damp sponge or microfiber cloth. Never use coarse products, steel wool, scouring products, or disinfectants with bleach
Pump troubleshooting: The water pump is one of the most important parts of your waterfall to monitor. The pump should be running quietly, if it is noisy or stops running, it means there is a problem with the way it is set up or it does not have enough water. The pump must be fully submerged in water at all times or it could cause damage. If it is not fully submerged, add water until the water level is even with the bottom of the stone or glass face. If the pump doesn’t start or noise continues it usually means there are air bubbles in the pump; try turning the pump on and off a couple of times to help prime the intake. Sometimes, just give it a few minutes and the pump should run more quietly as the air bubbles are cleared out. If the pump is still making noise and there are adequate water levels, try removing the pump and reinstalling it properly, making sure it isn’t vibrating against the side or bottom of the water basin and sitting on the foam pad. It may also be time to clean the pump as directed.
The water pumps are made to run 24 hrs a day and frequently turning them on and off could contribute to a shorter life span of the pump. Also, standing water is harder to keep clean and fresh so we recommend running your waterfall as often as safely possible.
By following these simple maintenance guidelines you will have an indoor waterfall that is soothing and relaxing by providing soft peaceful sounds of flowing water.
